Races We're Watching
Down-the-ballot races APU members are paying attention to
- Ella Peterson is paying close attention to the NJ-3 Congressional race between freshman Democratic Representative Andy Kim and Republican businessman David Richter. Representative Kim narrowly won his seat 2018, unseating the incumbent Republican member, Tom MacArthur, in a race that was largely waged over healthcare. No Democrat has successfully won re-election in the district since the Civil War, and the race is currently rated as a "Tossup" by the Cook Political Report.
- Virginia Ryan is watching the MA Senate Democratic primary between Senator Ed Markey and Representative Joe Kennedy. Representative Kennedy is a young politician who has galvanized a lot of support and excitement recently, perhaps due to name recognition. He is slightly more moderate than Senator Markey, who worked closely with Representative Ocasio-Cortez to write the Green New Deal and has been one of the most consistently progressive votes in the Senate, so the race may have important implications on the tilt of Senate Democrats.
- Ben Yared is watching the Alabama Senate race and the MI-03 Congressional race. In Alabama, incumbent Doug Jones, the lone Democrat Senator from the deep south, is facing off against Republican retired football coach Tommy Tuberville. Tuberville, who has the endorsement of President Trump, defeated former Senator and U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions in the primary. This seat is crucial to both parties in gaining control of the upper chamber, and despite Alabama's heavy Republican lean, the incumbent Jones is thought to have a solid chance. MI-03 is the district of former-Republican, now Libertarian Party congressman Justin Amash, who is not seeking reelection. The Republican primary for this seat was hotly contested, with Peter Meijer, grandson of Meijer grocery store founder Frederik Meijer, winning. Meijer won despite remaining about as distant from President Trump as any Republican candidate for national office, in large part by tapping into his family's vast economic resources. His Democratic opponent, Hillary Scholten, is also quite well funded, and they are competing in a district with key bellwether demographics for national elections - including some suburban areas that were Republican strongholds prior to 2016 but are now quite competitive.
